Hurricane defeats Pioneers
| |

The Pioneers kicked off their 2005 Season last night in a nonconference contest with the
2-0 Jonesboro Golden Hurricane. Head coach Mark Rush took the field for the first time with
the Pioneers, and 6 of his starters also stepped onto the field for their very first varsity
baseball start. What looked like an easy Pioneer victory early in the game turned into a 1 run
loss for the home team, but overall the team performed very well for their first appearance with
some potential starters still not cleared for play after just completing basketball season.

Starting Pitcher Evan Eary took the mound and lead the Pioneer defense for the
first 5 innings. At that point they were in complete command of the game. Leading the Hurricane
8 to 3 with strong batting, solid pitching by Eary and only 1 fielding error, the Pioneers appeared
to be on track for a season starting victory. However, pitching changes by both squads completely
changed the complexion of the game. Jonesboro starting pitcher Hunter Smith who had allowed 7 runs
on 5 hits was relieved in the 3rd innning by Jonathan Million who grealy quieted the Pioneer bats, holding
them to only 2 hits and 1 run in his 3 innings on the mound. Pioneer sophomore Cody Aycock relieved Eary
but was quickly relieved himself after facing 4 batters and allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk. Junior
Cameron Ward took the mound but was unable to stem the Hurricane's resurgence giving up 3 runs before he
was able to close the inning. The Pioneers reclaimed the lead with 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th against
Jonesboro's Jonathan Cook but again the Hurricane rallied against Ward forcing his relief by Addison Rayford
after 2 runs and 1 out in the top of the seventh. Rayford closed the inning, allowing only 1 hit. Jonesboro closed
with Senior southpaw Jack Mcgrath who faced 4 Pioneers giving up only 1 walk. Final Score: Jonesboro 11, Batesville 10.

Leading the way offensively for the Pioneers was Hunter Platt with a single, a home run, 2 runs scored and 4 RBI's.
Jason Angel singled, doubled, scored once and claimed 2 RBI's. Eary doubled and scored twice.
The Pioneers next game will be at 4:00 PM, Thursday, March 10th at Searcy.

Scoring Rule Review
Question #1
Bottom of the Seventh winning run on 3rd base. The batter pulls one down the first base line. He advances to second
and the runner at third easily strolls in to score the winning run. What hit is the batter credited with?
It didn't take JBodine72 (aka James Smith) long to answer this one correctly. The batter is credited with a rbi single. Regardless of
which base he ends the play on, he can only be credited with the number of bases the runner who scores the winning run advances.
So, with the winning run on third he can only be credited with a single. The exception to the rule? Of course, there is always
an exception! An out of the park Home Run will be scored as such, and is the only situation where the Home team who
goes into the bottom of the final inning tied or behind may win by more than 1 run.
Question #2
Since that one was answered so quickly let's try one that may be a little harder. With a runner at first the batter hits a ground
ball to the shortstop. He fields the ball cleanly and makes a throw to the 2nd baseman in an attempt to get the lead runner.
The throw is wide and both runners are safe. How do you score the batters AB and the runners advance to second?

If you get the first correct answer I'll credit you for your superior baseball rules knowledge on the

Rules Review Disclaimer: These interpretations are my own. They may well be incorrect. I try to research
them well before I use them, but the rules of baseball, which seem very simple, often are not. The point of the
review is to stimulate thought and to clarify situations that I know have presented difficulties in the past.
So my apoligies in advance for any mistakes that may creep in.
