Pioneers sweep Patriots

Patriots can't Walk the Talk!

published Saturday, March 19, 2005

The Pioneers traveled to Marion last night for their second round of conference competition, making up the games rained out on Tuesday night. While the entertainment from the Patriot dugout was as always, laughable, the trash talking Patriots again fell short of ending a winning streak that has stretched for over a decade, as the Pioneers bested the Patriots 7-4 and 9-2. The Pioneer record with the Patriots now stands at 23-0.

The opening game was a tough one with good performances by both teams defensively and both teams pitchers performing well. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 2nd when Pioneer pitcher Evan Eary watched the lead off Patriot put one over the fence. Eary continued to battle and although the Patriots loaded the bases they were denied any further runs. The Pioneers answered quickly in the top of the 3rd when lead off batter Hunter Platt cranked out his own home run to tie the score at 1-1 where it would remain until the 5th inning. Platt reaches on an error, advances on a passed ball and a balk and is scored by Chris Milum who singles. Courtesy runner Travis Garner relieves Milum and is joined on the bases by Addison Rayford and Jason Angel with consecutive walks. A Patriot fielding error on a Cody Aycock ground ball scores Garner and Rayford. The Patriots score 2 runs in the bottom of the inning, both the result of Pioneer errors to bring the score to 4-3. The Patriots tie the score in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. The Pioneers reach base quickly when Casey Aycock singles and advances to 3rd on a Patriot fielding error. Platt also reaches on an error and moves to scoring position by stealing second. Nick Davidson executes a perfect squeeze bunt scoring Aycock and reaching 1st. Davidson steals second and advances to third when Eary singles scoring Platt. Davidson will cross the plate on a wild pitch, scoring the final run for the Pioneers. While the Patriots managed to get runners on they were unable to score bringing the final score to 7-4 Pioneers. A marathon effort by Pitcher Evan Eary with 9 strikeouts and an impressive performance by catcher Chris Milum picking off 3 Patriots runners on the bases.

The nightcap game goes much quicker, with only 1 hit in the first inning; a triple by Platt. In the second inning the Pioneers bat 10. Angel singles, Rayford gets a bunt single, Cameron Ward reaches on a fielders choice leaving Angel out attempting third. Jeff Whitener walks, loading the bases. Coach Rush goes to the short game, squeezing again with accomplished bunter Kelly Davis. Davis bunts, scores Rayford and safely reaches first. The rattled Patriot pitcher hits Platt, forcing in Ward and allows Whitener to score on a passed ball. Davidson squeezes in Davis, and Eary singles scoring Platt. Eary eventually scores when the Patriot pitcher attempts to throw out courtesy runner Garner who was stealing second and throws the ball into the outfield. The Patriots answer in the bottom of the inning with 1 run to bring the score to 6-1. In the 4th the Pioneers open their lead with a lead off Davis double, scored by Davidson on a 2 bagger who is then scored by Eary with the 3rd double of the inning. Again the Patriots score a solo run, bringing the score to 8-2. The Pioneers score their last and the final run on the game in the 6th when lead off batter Davis reaches 2nd on an error and is scored by Davidson on a base hit. Pitcher Addison Rayford controlled the ball well walking on 1 Patriot batter. The Pioneers added excellent fielding with 3 double plays, one of them an unassisted dp by Pioneer first baseman Jason Angel. Catcher Chris Milum also picked off a Patriot runner in the nightcap to bring his total for the night to 4 dazed runners headed to the dugout.

Leading the offense for the Pioneers in the opener; Platt - Home Run, single. In the nightcap; Platt - triple; Davidson - double, single; Rayford - 2 singles; Davis - double, single; Eary - double, single.

The Pioneers travel to Harrison today to face the Van Buren Pointers at 5:30 PM.

Scoring Rule Review

Question #1

Bottom of the Seventh winning run on 3rd base. The batter pulls one down the first base line. He advances to second and the runner at third easily strolls in to score the winning run. What hit is the batter credited with?

It didn't take JBodine72 (aka James Smith) long to answer this one correctly. The batter is credited with a rbi single. Regardless of which base he ends the play on, he can only be credited with the number of bases the runner who scores the winning run advances. So, with the winning run on third he can only be credited with a single. The exception to the rule? Of course, there is always an exception! An out of the park Home Run will be scored as such, and is the only situation where the Home team who goes into the bottom of the final inning tied or behind may win by more than 1 run.

Question #2

Since that one was answered so quickly let's try one that may be a little harder. With a runner at first the batter hits a ground ball to the shortstop. He fields the ball cleanly and makes a throw to the 2nd baseman in an attempt to get the lead runner. The throw is wide and both runners are safe. How do you score the batters AB and the runners advance to second?

James gets this one first also. The batter reaches base on a fielder's choice, and the runner advances on the error. This is one of those situations where you score what should have happened instead of what did.

Question #3

There are 4 conditions that must be met to score a sacrifice bunt. I'll give you the last one. The batter must be out. Now give me the first 3 conditions and the exception (I told you there is always one) to the condition I gave you.

Rules Review Disclaimer: These interpretations are my own. They may well be incorrect. I try to research them well before I use them, but the rules of baseball, which seem very simple, often are not. The point of the review is to stimulate thought and to clarify situations that I know have presented difficulties in the past. So my apoligies in advance for any mistakes that may creep in.
