Pioneers swept at Harrison

Pitching and Defense alone can't win Games

published Sunday, March 27, 2005

The Pioneers had a tough weekend at Harrison. As always in the Harrison Tournament the weather was wet and cold with a nice cool breeze thrown in. The Pioneers arrived in good spirits Friday afternoon, fresh off a sweep of the Marion Patriots on Thursday evening. Their opponents for the opening game were the Van Buren Pointers, a team that had dealt them a loss only a week earlier. The Pioneers had played them close at Van Buren losing only 4-3 and I had high hopes that we would even the score. However, it was not to be. While errors were the Pioneers undoing in the first meeting, batting would bring about their demise in the second. Pioneer pitchers, Cody Aycock and Nick Davidson both threw well, with Aycock gathering 5 strikeouts while allowing 6 hits and Davidson, in his first mound appearance, striking out 3 while allowing only 1 hit. The Pioneer defense also performed well with only 1 recorded error, but with only 3 Pioneer hits for the game, the batting fell short of the mark and allowed the Pointers to claim another victory against the Pioneers.

Saturday morning finds the Pioneers pitted against the Harrison Goblins in what would prove to be a tight contest and another loss for the Pioneers. Cameron Ward takes the mound for a great performance, allowing only 4 hits with 4 strikeouts. The defense played well with the outfield combination of Kelly Davis, Hunter Platt and Addison Rayford doing a great job, accounting for 9 outs with the infield forcing the Goblins to work for every base, we should have been able to best the Goblins, except for our repeated failure to hit. Again, a miserly 3 hits was unable to generate any Pioneer runs with our solo run coming from a Goblin error.

Saturday afternoon and a light rain does nothing to perk up the Pioneers batting in the 5 inning consolation match with the West Plains, MO Zizzers. Clint Walls pitched for the Pioneers giving up 6 hits with 2 strikeouts. The Pioneer fielders committed 3 errors, 2 allowing runs and with only 1 hit, down 5 - 3 going into the last inning it was looking pretty bleak for the Pioneers. The Pioneer batters did put together a last inning rally and score 3 runs, however a pitching change dispelled any hope for a Pioneer win.

For the series: Davidson - 3 singles, double; Milum - double; Angel - 2 singles; Rayford, Eary, Davis, Walls - single.

The Pioneers return to conference play Tuesday at home when they face their conference rivals the Nettleton Raiders.

Scoring Rule Review

Question #1

Bottom of the Seventh winning run on 3rd base. The batter pulls one down the first base line. He advances to second and the runner at third easily strolls in to score the winning run. What hit is the batter credited with?

It didn't take JBodine72 (aka James Smith) long to answer this one correctly. The batter is credited with a rbi single. Regardless of which base he ends the play on, he can only be credited with the number of bases the runner who scores the winning run advances. So, with the winning run on third he can only be credited with a single. The exception to the rule? Of course, there is always an exception! An out of the park Home Run will be scored as such, and is the only situation where the Home team who goes into the bottom of the final inning tied or behind may win by more than 1 run.

Question #2

Since that one was answered so quickly let's try one that may be a little harder. With a runner at first the batter hits a ground ball to the shortstop. He fields the ball cleanly and makes a throw to the 2nd baseman in an attempt to get the lead runner. The throw is wide and both runners are safe. How do you score the batters AB and the runners advance to second?

James gets this one first also. The batter reaches base on a fielder's choice, and the runner advances on the error. This is one of those situations where you score what should have happened instead of what did.

Question #3

There are 4 conditions that must be met to score a sacrifice bunt. I'll give you the last one. The batter must be out. Now give me the first 3 conditions and the exception (I told you there is always one) to the condition I gave you.

Rules Review Disclaimer: These interpretations are my own. They may well be incorrect. I try to research them well before I use them, but the rules of baseball, which seem very simple, often are not. The point of the review is to stimulate thought and to clarify situations that I know have presented difficulties in the past. So my apoligies in advance for any mistakes that may creep in.
