The Pioneers faced the Newport Greyhounds at home Tuesday. What started out as a defensive game turned into a foot race in the 3rd inning. While the Pioneers jumped the Greyhounds off the line, Newport took the lead in the 3rd and held it until the Pioneers passed them on the backstretch of the 5th. Newport was unable to keep up and the Pioneer final kick added 3 runs in the 6th.

Starting Pitcher: Gatlin
Reliever: Rayford
Closer: Altom
Final Score: Batesville - 16, Newport - 12

Greyhound pitcher Welch struggled in the first. Leading off by hitting Francis, he walked Smith and singled Gatlin, scoring Francis. He then hits Burba to load the bases Smith will score on a Fuqua sac fly, leaving 2 on(2-0 Pioneers). The Greyhounds will answer strongly in the 3rd, when a tight strike zone will leave Gatlin struggling and allow the Greyhounds 6 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks. The Pioneers will tie it up in the bottom of the inning when lead off Fletcher walks, is joined by Fuqua on a double, and Skinner on a walk. Davis scores Fletcher on a single and Francis brings in Fuqua on a sac fly. Smith adds the last 2 runs with a base clearing triple (6-6). The Greyhounds weren't done yet though. At the top of their order in the 4th, they lead off with a walk and a single. Gatlin is relieved by Rayford who gives up 4 more hits and the hounds are off with 5 more runs. The Pioneers add 2 in the bottom when Burba hits a lead off home run and Skinner singles and then scores on a Newport fielding error(11-8 Newport).

Newport is scoreless in the 5th and the Pioneers pull out and pass. Three consecutive singles will put Francis, Smith and Rayford on base. Fletcher will reach on a fielders choice scoring Francis but leaving Rayford out at 2nd. Fuqua clears the bases with his 8th home run of the year and Skinner reaching on his 8th (HP). He will score when the shaken Greyhounds commit a series of errors (13-11 Pioneers). The 6th inning will see the last runs of the game when the Greyhound lead off batter walks and is eventually scored on a double. The Pioneers add a quick 3 runs when Gatlin advances to 2nd on a Newport error. Burba hits an an infield ground ball which the pitcher throws to 3rd to stop Gatlin's advance. A controversial call leaves Gatlin safe. The frustrated pitcher makes a bad pick attempt on Burba which scores Gatlin and advances Burba who adds to the heat by scoring on a wild pitch. Fuqua reaches on a shortstop overthrow to first and is scored by Skinner on a single. The Pioneers break the tape and win the game.

Starting Pitcher Gatlin pitched 3 innings and allowed 8 runs on 7 hits with 4 walks and 2 strikeouts.
Reliever Rayford pitched 3 innings and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
Closer Altom pitched 1 inning allowing 0 runs on 0 hits with 0 walks and 0 strikeouts.
Offensive Leaders: Smith - triple, single; Burba - home run; Fuqua - home run, double; Skinner - 2 singles.

Rule Review #8

A runner at 3rd scores on a dropped fly ball deep in right field.
Does the batter get an rbi?

Rules Review Disclaimer: These interpretations are my own. They may well be incorrect. I try to research them well before I use them, but the rules of baseball, which seem very simple, often are not. The point of the review is to stimulate thought and to clarify situations that I know have presented difficulties in the past. So my apoligies in advance for any mistakes that may creep in.
