Pioneers Claim 20th Victory
Defeat Goblins at Home
| |
The Pioneers picked up their 20th victory of the year last night when they hosted the Harrison Goblins. The Goblins
had just finished up their conference schedule the night before and had closed the season at 10-4 in conference play.
This record put them in second in the 4A West and will pit them against Wynne in first round action at Blytheville on
Saturday. Batesville has already locked up the 4A East Championship and will be facing Greenwood, the #4 seed from the
West at noon on Saturday. Harrison did not send their best to face the Pioneers with only 10 team members showing up
and only a handful of varsity starters present. This game was important to us as our last game before Saturday's
State Tournament start and it would have been better to have gotten a somewhat better workout but it was better than
nothing. If we see Harrison again it would be at Baum since they are in the other side of the bracket.

The Pioneers hit well with 14 total hits and our "Pair of Aces" of Evan Eary and Addison Rayford each got 3 innings on
the mound with closer Cameron Ward pitching the 7th. The Goblins only managed 6 hits and 2 runs, with only 1 earned.
The Pioneers put their first run on the board when lead off hitter Hunter Platt singles, steals second and advances to
third when Nick Davidson flys out. Eary base hits to score Platt. The Pioneers tack on 3 in the second when Clint
Walls, Rayford and Kelly Davis hit 3 consecutive singles. Walls and Rayford are scored by Davis who is singled in by
Platt to bring the score to 4-0 Pioneers. The score remains unchanged until the 5th inning when Harrison manages 3
consecutive hits and 1 run on Rayford. The Pioneers pick up 3 more runs when Jason Angel, Rayford and Davis load the
bases all with hits. Casey Aycock is hit by a pitch to score Angel and load the bases again. Platt hits safely, scoring
Rayford and Davis to bring the score to 7-1 Pioneers. The Goblins get the first 2 batters on in the top of the sixth
to threaten but a 4-6-3 double play and a standing strike out takes the bat out of their hands. In the bottom of the
inning Chris Milum is hit by a pitch and is relieved at first by Kyle McMullin. McMullin is scored by an Angel double.
Walls advances Angel with a hit and Rayford scores him with another to bring the score to 9-1 after six. The Goblins
put 2 runners on in the top of the seventh with a walk and an Pioneer error, while the lead runner scores Ward shuts
them down with 2 strikeouts to end the game and claim the Pioneers 20th season win. Final Score 9-2 Pioneers.

Leading the offense for the Pioneers was Addison Rayford who was 3 for 3 at the plate with 2 runs scored. Jason Angel
was 3 for 4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Hunter Platt was 3 for 4 with 3 rbi's. Kelly Davis and Clint
Walls both were 2 for 4 and Davis had 2 runs scored and 2 rbi's.
Good Luck to the Pioneers at Blytheville, I hope all the Pioneer fans will make the trip North and support the Pioneer
Saturday and every day throughout the tournament.

Scoring Rule Review
Question #1
Bottom of the Seventh winning run on 3rd base. The batter pulls one down the first base line. He advances to second
and the runner at third easily strolls in to score the winning run. What hit is the batter credited with?
It didn't take JBodine72 (aka James Smith) long to answer this one correctly. The batter is credited with a rbi single. Regardless of
which base he ends the play on, he can only be credited with the number of bases the runner who scores the winning run advances.
So, with the winning run on third he can only be credited with a single. The exception to the rule? Of course, there is always
an exception! An out of the park Home Run will be scored as such, and is the only situation where the Home team who
goes into the bottom of the final inning tied or behind may win by more than 1 run.
Question #2
Since that one was answered so quickly let's try one that may be a little harder. With a runner at first the batter hits a ground
ball to the shortstop. He fields the ball cleanly and makes a throw to the 2nd baseman in an attempt to get the lead runner.
The throw is wide and both runners are safe. How do you score the batters AB and the runners advance to second?
James gets this one first also. The batter reaches base on a fielder's choice, and the runner advances on the error.
This is one of those situations where you score what should have happened instead of what did.
Question #3
There are 4 conditions that must be met to score a sacrifice bunt. I'll give you the last one. The batter must be out. Now give me
the first 3 conditions and the exception (I told you there is always one) to the condition I gave you.

Rules Review Disclaimer: These interpretations are my own. They may well be incorrect. I try to research
them well before I use them, but the rules of baseball, which seem very simple, often are not. The point of the
review is to stimulate thought and to clarify situations that I know have presented difficulties in the past.
So my apoligies in advance for any mistakes that may creep in.
